KARIEGA PROJECT 10K TREE CHALLENGE

THE CHALLENGE

The 10k Tree Challenge is one of our more ambitious projects that aims to plant 10,000 trees in the low-income neighbourhoods surrounding Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa by 2025. In addition to the well known ecological benefits of planting trees, the 10k Tree Challenge seeks to improve dignity, safety, and prosperity by altering community perception in these urban environments. In doing so, we hope to improve the livability and vitality of the participating neighbourhoods. So the purpose of this project goes beyond ecology and aims to transform the urban environment to improve residents’ perceptions of safety and prosperity.

THE PLAN

Our goal is to conduct the bulk of the annual planting on Mandela Day, 18 July. We will continue to do this each year until we meet our goal of 10,000 trees! We chose Mandela Day not only to honour the great man, but also to bring together hundreds of community stakeholders who can take advantage of this opportunity to earn Kulu Coin.

OUR TREE NURSERY

The Kariega Project tree nursery was started 2 November 2013 with the planting of 70 cuttings and seeds. The species select are the Cape Ash and Wild Plum, both hardy indigenous trees.

The Kariega Project aims to continue to grow cuttings and seeds by over the next few years. Thereafter the nursery will be decentralised to the community and will continue to grow various species that will be planted annually on Mandela Day.
